seeing as there were only a few people in the bar, i sent a text out to see if i could get a few more people. mary came by, and then stephanie and kendall came too. so that was great of them. our performance morphed moreso into a rehearsal as we played a few songs we'd only ever played once before. but that's okay. it's still fun to play. although playing it as a performance without running through it on the day of is trickier than picking up my oboe to do the same thing. there's far more of a need for kinesthetic memory with my playing of the steel pans. i have to remind myself of the patterns of movement for each piece. it improves with practice and playing them multiple times, but it's not like i can really practice that without the actual pan.
and so it was a fairly successful gig/rehearsal. not everyone was there, but that's okay. i like playing a lot. there was a grad student there who needed to do some interviews for her thesis which apparently has something to do with non western music traditions being taught. and so i happily was interviewed. brittany and i had the same response to it -- we figured soon that will be us needing participants for our research so we may as well help out anyone else we can in that position.
and then while i had brought a book to read at the library with me, ann at the conclusion of our gig, bought us a drink. so this prompted me to stay in the bar and hang out with brittany and some of her friends instead of going to the library.
i then came back and made pancakes and salsa, only to discover that the can of "mexican blend" beans is no substitute for a can of black beans. so the salsa is close and okay, but not fantastic.
i did do some reading but not as much as i should have as i was distracted by the computer. i later had to sort out whether or not we had to go to class on saturday. we voted/decided against going. and then watched stardust with kendall and stephanie. that's a fun movie.
