13dec: madrid, dia dos

wasn't too sad about missing the continental breakfast when we ended up at the churrieria. pretty sure that might not be spelled right. but anyway, my breakfast of four smallish churros and chocolate was delicious. thick, rich hot chocolate and dipping the churros. mmmm. so delicious. i'd eat some of that now too.

then we walked down to go to the palace and cathedral.

passed a plaza on the way.

we entered the palace, through security, without paying, which i found strange. The guy had made some sort of announcement that i didn't hear which turned a lot of people away from the line, which i thought was odd, but continued on (should have been sign one). We went around the large open court taking some pictures. Then stood in line to see the two exhibits - one with nativity stuff and one of royal statue collection pieces. We saw a bunch of fancy dressed people going into the palace (sign 2). And as we left, we noticed the sign announcing that the palace was closed that day (sign 3, which then made it all make sense).

With that we went and were able to go into the cathedral. which was beautiful.

Walked by another plaza and outside a park on our way to the tomb statue thing.

Just missed the hours that was open, but we saw it from the outside.

and it's amazing view.

Walked back through Plaza Espana and attempted to find another art museum. We made it to its location on the map, but it must not have been open (was sunday and on top of that siesta time). So we walked back around to come across a road that was highlighted online for shopping.

Had another meal of tortilla at another cafeteria along the way. I love it, a pincha (slice) is 1, delicious and 2, like 2.5 euro or so. mmm.

Found a few souvenir stores among other stores. headed back through the plaza and i was able to check out the one promising sounding flamenco place (i wasn't going to give up on that easily) and decided we'd come back to check out the show.

We went to a cafeteria to read (well moreso so amber could get more churros and i had bad papas fritas). So again i got some reading done at the hostel - amber slept. And then we went to the place for flamenco. Which instead of 31 euro, was 10 euro for the glass of wine i had. Show was good too. seemed to be maybe in connection with a school or something because the people were of varying ability levels. Two dudes and 4 ladies. Good stuff.

went back and slept. and luckily without the crazy because she left that day. excellent.
